Washcloth of the Month: October
Worms Crawl In

As a reminder each month in 2022 I will be releasing a different washcloth pattern featuring fun design elements to try, as well as colors that represent the mood of the month. These projects check so many boxes:
Small & Portable
Super interesting! The pattern & colors will change each month
Easy way to learn or improve a skill on a small scale like lace or cables
Great palette cleanser between larger more complicated patterns or projects
Practical & versatile; at the end of the year, you will have 12 or more washcloths that can be used from the bathroom to the kitchen and everywhere in between.
They make great gifts!
October Washcloth of the Month: Worms Crawl In
For October I choose to go with another simple stitch pattern that consists of just knit & purl stitches. This stitch creates short vertical lines & creates the perfect amount of texture for a washcloth. This pattern is easy to remember & easy to see where you left off, making it perfect for this busy time of year.

Being October, I felt it was only fitting to knit Worms Crawl In in orange & black. These two colors scream October! The samples are knit up in Lily Sugar & Cream 100% cotton in Hot Orange & Black.
The Name
You may be curious where the name Worms Crawl In comes from. It comes from the poem The Hearse Song, which has many versions online, but the origin is unknown. I first heard it as a child, an although it can be quite morbid, it is also lighthearted too. Quite fitting for the name of a Halloween themed washcloth! Here is a snippet of the poem that the name comes from:
"Don't ever laugh as a hearse goes by For you may be the next to die They wrap you up in bloody sheets To drop you six feet underneath
They put you in a pinewood box And cover you up with dirt and rocks It all goes well for about a week And then, your coffin begins to leak
And the worms crawl in, the worms crawl out"
